Study Permit Canada
Canada is one of the world's most popular destinations for international students. Thousands of students travel to Canada each year to pursue higher education at universities, colleges, and other designated learning institutions.
To study in Canada, most international students must obtain a Study Permit issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). A study permit allows eligible foreign nationals to live in Canada temporarily while completing their academic program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Halani Immigration Services Inc. provides professional guidance for international students who wish to apply for a Canadian study permit. Our services are led by Shoukat Qumruddin Halani, RCIC-IRB, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC) under License No. R711322. Canada issued 4.6 million study permits since 2015, with India alone accounting for 1.5M. After the January 2024 national cap and PAL/TAL requirement, 2025 volumes are down ~43% from the 2023 peak. See our live study permit data dashboard for year-by-year totals by country, study level, and province — and the temporary→PR transition data if you're planning long-term.
What Is a Study Permit
A study permit is an official document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to study in Canada at an approved educational institution. Students must normally obtain a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) before applying for a study permit.
A study permit may allow international students to: study full-time at a Canadian institution; work part-time during their studies if eligible; and remain in Canada during the duration of their program. Study permits are typically issued for the length of the academic program, with additional time provided to prepare for departure or apply for further immigration options.
Requirements for a Canadian Study Permit
To obtain a study permit, applicants must demonstrate that they meet several immigration requirements. Applicants must generally show that they:
- Have received a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution
- Have sufficient funds to pay tuition fees and living expenses
- Intend to leave Canada after completing their studies
- Do not pose security or health risks
Applicants may also need to provide supporting documents such as: proof of financial support; academic transcripts and certificates; language test results where required; and identity documents and travel history.
Studying at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
International students must enroll in a Designated Learning Institution, which is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Designated Learning Institutions include: universities; colleges; technical institutes; and certain private institutions authorized to host international students. Students should verify that their chosen institution is listed as a Designated Learning Institution before applying for a study permit.
