Study Permit Processing Time — Current Windows and Timeline

Current processing windows for Study Permit, the factors that move the timeline up or down, and the typical milestone-by-milestone sequence from application submission to final decision.

Last reviewed:
Current Window

8–16 weeks depending on country of residence and visa office. Some countries process within 2 weeks; others extend to 6 months.

Times are operationally derived from recent IRCC service standards and our own file-volume observations. Individual files vary based on the factors below.

What moves the timeline

These are the variables that most commonly extend or shorten Study Permit processing beyond the typical window.

  • Country of residence — Manila, New Delhi, Beijing, Mexico City typically faster; Lagos, Tehran, Islamabad longer.
  • Application stream — since SDS closed in November 2024, all study permit applications now process under the regular stream.
  • DLI and program reputation — established DLIs and degree programs process faster than newer/private DLIs.
  • Financial-documentation depth — strong financial files (GIC + sponsor income + property) process faster than thin files.
  • Prior refusals — past Canadian visa refusals lengthen review and trigger additional scrutiny.

Typical milestone-by-milestone timeline

The table below sequences the main checkpoints from application submission to final decision. Use this to plan downstream events like start dates, housing, and family arrival.

MilestoneTypical duration
Application submission → biometrics instruction1–4 weeks
Biometrics → eligibility review2–6 weeks
Eligibility review → decision4–12 weeks (varies by country)
Approval → passport request1–4 weeks
Passport submission → POE letter of introduction1–3 weeks

Frequently asked questions — Study Permit processing

How can I check my study permit processing time?
IRCC publishes processing-time estimates on canada.ca, updated monthly. Our live processing-times tool pulls from the same source. Search by country of residence and visa office to get the current estimate. Individual files vary based on visa-office workload, application completeness, and any security or background-check holds.
Did SDS closing make processing slower?
Yes, somewhat. Before November 8, 2024, qualifying SDS applications from 14 designated countries (India, China, Philippines, Pakistan, Vietnam, etc.) typically processed within 20 calendar days. After SDS closure, all applications process under the regular stream, which is country-and-visa-office dependent and generally takes 8–16 weeks. There is no current fast-track replacement.
My study permit application has been pending for 3 months. Should I worry?
Three months of pending is normal for regular-stream files. By month 4, request GCMS notes (free ATIP Privacy Act request) to confirm what's happening. Common holds: financial-documentation review, SOP credibility review, medical exam pending, or background check. If nothing in the notes indicates a problem, just wait — visa-office workload affects timing more than file complexity for most applications.
