AAIP — Alberta Advantage Immigration Program
Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program (formerly AINP). Operates Express Entry-aligned, Dedicated Pathways (Healthcare, Tourism, Construction, Agriculture, Tech), Rural Renewal, and Entrepreneur streams.
What is AAIP?
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program. Previously named AINP (Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program), AAIP was rebranded and restructured in 2022 with expanded stream options targeting Alberta's labour-market needs.
A successful AAIP nomination grants either +600 CRS (for Express Entry-aligned streams) or direct PR application eligibility (for base streams).
AAIP streams
Alberta Express Entry Stream
- For candidates in the federal Express Entry pool with Alberta connection (work experience, post-secondary, family).
- Provincial nomination adds +600 CRS, virtually guaranteeing an ITA.
Dedicated Pathways (occupation-specific)
- Tourism & Hospitality — for hospitality industry occupations.
- Healthcare — RNs, LPNs, physicians, allied health, PSWs with Alberta employer offers.
- Construction — skilled construction trades with Alberta employer.
- Agriculture & agri-food — agricultural and food-production occupations.
- Technology — specific tech NOCs (similar to BC PNP Tech).
Rural Renewal Stream
- For designated rural Alberta communities outside Calgary and Edmonton.
- Lower CRS threshold; requires community endorsement and demonstrated intent to settle.
- Designated communities include various smaller cities and rural areas across Alberta.
Entrepreneur streams
- Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur — for foreign graduates of Alberta DLIs.
- Rural Entrepreneur — separate stream for designated rural communities.
- Standard Entrepreneur — for high-net-worth applicants establishing/acquiring Alberta businesses.
Self-Employed Farmer
- For experienced farm managers and operators planning to establish/take over an Alberta farm.
AAIP application process
- Submit Expression of Interest (EOI) through AAIP portal.
- Wait for invitation — AAIP runs targeted draws.
- Submit full application with documents.
- Receive nomination (typically 3-9 months).
- Apply to IRCC for federal PR.
Common gotchas
- Genuine intent to settle in Alberta: AAIP scrutinizes intent. Applicants without credible Alberta connection (work, post-secondary, family) face higher scrutiny.
- Employer eligibility for Dedicated Pathways: employer must meet AAIP-specific requirements; the job offer must match the stream's targeted occupations.
- Rural Renewal community endorsement: applicants applying through Rural Renewal must obtain community endorsement, which requires direct engagement with the community immigration office.
AAIP vs. OINP and BC PNP
- AAIP Alberta Express Entry: similar to OINP HCP and BC PNP Skilled Worker but Alberta-specific.
- AAIP Dedicated Pathways: similar to BC PNP Tech / Healthcare and OINP Tech draws, focused on Alberta priorities.
- AAIP Rural Renewal: unique to Alberta, no direct equivalent in Ontario or BC.
