French Language Draw — Express Entry French-Proficiency Category

Express Entry category-based draws specifically inviting candidates with CLB 7+ in French (NCLC 7+). The lowest-CRS-cutoff category in 2025-2026, with draws as low as 379. Strong path for any French-fluent applicant outside Quebec.

What is a French language draw?

A French language draw is an Express Entry category-based draw that invites candidates who:

  • Have an active Express Entry profile
  • Demonstrate CLB 7 or higher in French (NCLC 7+ in IRCC's French-equivalent scale)
  • Meet program-eligibility criteria (FSW, CEC, or FST)

These draws have had the lowest CRS cutoffs of any Express Entry draw type in 2025-2026.

STEM category470-510

French language draws have run at the lowest threshold of any category — a significant CRS advantage for French-fluent candidates.

How to demonstrate CLB 7+ French

Submit an approved French-language test result:

  • TEF Canada (Test d'évaluation de français)
  • TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français)

Approximate equivalencies:

  • NCLC 7 / CLB 7: TEF ~207-232 in each section; TCF ~B2 level
  • NCLC 8: TEF ~248-262; TCF B2 high
  • NCLC 9: TEF ~263+ in each section; TCF C1
  • NCLC 10: TEF top tier; TCF C1 high

Check current IRCC conversion tables for exact equivalencies.

Realistic French acquisition

For applicants without prior French exposure, reaching CLB 7 typically requires:

  • 12-24 months of focused study at intermediate-to-advanced levels
  • Either intensive Alliance Française / DELF-DALF programs in country of nationality, or
  • French-immersion environments (work, study, or community in francophone settings)

Halani's note

If you have any French background — Lebanese, Maghreb (Algerian, Moroccan, Tunisian), West/Central African francophone, French-medium Indian education (Pondicherry), or French-medium Filipino schooling — French language draws are the highest-leverage Express Entry path. Worth investing in French test preparation even if it's a stretch.
