CELPIP-General — Canadian English Test for IRCC
The IRCC-accepted English test designed in Canada, using exclusively Canadian English accents. Fully computer-based including speaking (no human examiner). Distinct from CELPIP-General LS, which is for citizenship applications only.
What is CELPIP-General?
CELPIP-General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program — General) is the IRCC-accepted English test designed specifically for Canadian immigration applications. Administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises.
CELPIP has two versions:
- CELPIP-General (full test) — accepted for all IRCC immigration applications including Express Entry, PNP, sponsorship
- CELPIP-General LS — listening + speaking only; accepted only for citizenship applications
CELPIP-General format
Four sections, total ~3 hours, fully computer-based:
- Listening (~47 minutes) — Canadian English accents only
- Reading (~55-60 minutes) — Canadian everyday situations
- Writing (~53-60 minutes) — Task 1 (email) + Task 2 (response to a survey)
- Speaking (~15-20 minutes) — recorded on computer, no human examiner in the room
Scoring (1-12 scale)
Each section scored 1-12. CELPIP scores map directly (approximately 1:1) to CLB.
CELPIP → CLB conversion
| CELPIP | CLB |

| 4 | 4 |
CELPIP advantages
- Fully computer-based — no human speaking interview (some applicants find this easier)
- Canadian-only accents — no British / Australian variation to adjust to
- Faster results — typically 4-5 calendar days
- Lower cost — ~CAD 295 vs IELTS ~CAD 320-350
CELPIP disadvantages
- Limited geographic availability outside Canada — few test centres in Pakistan, India, UAE, Philippines, etc.
- Computer-only speaking can be unfamiliar to applicants used to face-to-face speaking tests
- Practice resources less abundant than IELTS materials
Validity for IRCC
CELPIP results valid for 2 years from test date — same as IELTS.
Halani's note
CELPIP is most useful for applicants already in Canada (PGWP holders, work-permit holders, students) where CELPIP test centres are plentiful. For overseas applicants, IELTS General is usually the more practical choice due to wider availability.
