Biometrics — Fingerprints & Photo for IRCC Applications
Required collection of fingerprints and a digital photograph for most IRCC applications. Collected at a Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC), an Application Support Centre (US), or designated biometrics-collection partners. Fee: CAD 85 per individual / CAD 170 per family of 2+ / CAD 255 per group performing-arts entertainers.
What are biometrics?
Biometrics in the Canadian immigration context means the collection of:
- 10-fingerprint scan
- Digital photograph
These are stored in IRCC's system and used for identity verification, security screening, and matching against international databases (including Interpol and Five Eyes-partner databases).
When biometrics are required
For most application types:
- All applicants aged 14-79 must provide biometrics
- Biometrics are valid for 10 years from collection date
- Visitor / study / work permit applicants must provide before processing begins
- Permanent residence applicants must provide biometrics during the eAPR stage
Exemptions
- Applicants under 14 or over 79
- Canadian citizens (don't need biometrics for any Canadian application)
- Applicants applying for or holding US visas (in limited reciprocal arrangements)
- Specific application types (e.g. certain in-Canada extensions where biometrics were collected previously and are still valid)
Where biometrics are collected
- Canada Visa Application Centres (VACs) — operated by VFS Global in 150+ countries. Most non-Canadian applicants use a VAC.
- Service Canada locations in Canada for in-Canada applicants
- US Application Support Centres (ASCs) for applicants in the US
- Canadian embassies / consulates in limited cases (mostly closed; mostly handled by VACs)
Fee
- CAD 85 per individual
- CAD 170 per family of 2+ applying together
- CAD 255 per group of 3+ performing-arts entertainers
The fee is non-refundable even if the application is refused.
Common biometrics issues
- Expired biometrics: must redo if your 10-year biometrics period has expired and you have a new application
- Photo / fingerprint quality: the VAC will retake if scan quality is inadequate; no extra fee
- Booking delays: in busy periods, VAC appointments can be 2-6 weeks out; plan submission timing accordingly
- Travel for biometrics: if your nearest VAC is in another city/country, factor travel into the timeline
