Express Entry Profile Creation 2026 — Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Creating an Express Entry profile is free + can be done online in 30-60 minutes — IF you have your documents ready. Document preparation (IELTS, ECA, work experience) takes 2-6 months. This page walks through the full process from eligibility check through profile submission.

Phase 1: Eligibility check (before profile creation)

Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) eligibility

  • 1+ year continuous skilled work experience (TEER 0/1/2/3) in past 10 years
  • CLB 7+ in English or French in all 4 skills
  • ECA for foreign degrees
  • 67/100 selection-factor points minimum
  • Proof of funds: CAD $14,000+ (single), more for family

Canadian Experience Class (CEC) eligibility

  • 1+ year of Canadian skilled work experience (TEER 0/1/2/3) in past 3 years
  • CLB 7 for TEER 0/1; CLB 5 for TEER 2/3
  • No proof of funds required

Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC) eligibility

  • 2+ years skilled trades work experience in past 5 years
  • Qualifying job offer OR provincial certificate of qualification
  • CLB 5 speaking/listening, CLB 4 reading/writing
  • Proof of funds (unless valid job offer)

Phase 2: Document preparation (2-6 months)

Language test

  1. Choose IELTS General Training or CELPIP General (for English) OR TEF Canada / TCF Canada (for French)
  2. Prepare for test (typical 1-3 months focused study)
  3. Book + take test
  4. Receive results — verify scores meet minimum for your program

See IELTS Academic vs General + CELPIP vs IELTS.

Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

  1. Submit foreign degree + transcripts to WES/ICAS/IQAS/ICES
  2. Provider verifies with your university (slowest part — 4-12 weeks)
  3. Provider issues ECA report — typically 20 business days after document verification complete

See ECA Canada guide.

Work experience documentation

  • Employment letters from each employer with: dates of employment, job title, NOC code, main duties matching NOC description, salary, hours per week
  • Salary verification (pay stubs, tax returns, T4s)
  • Reference letters from supervisors

Identity + civil documents

  • Passport (current, 6+ months validity preferred)
  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Children's birth certificates (if applicable)

Police clearance certificates (for PR application stage, not profile)

Not required for profile creation. Needed after ITA when filing PR application.

Phase 3: Profile creation (30-60 minutes online)

Step 1: Create IRCC account

Visit canada.ca → IRCC online account. Create using GCKey or Sign-In Partner. Confirm email + set up account.

Step 2: Begin Express Entry profile

From IRCC account, click "Apply to come to Canada" → Express Entry. The system walks you through each section sequentially.

Step 3: Complete each section

  • Personal information: Name, date of birth, nationality, marital status
  • Spouse/CLP information (if applicable)
  • Dependent children (if applicable)
  • Contact information: Email, address
  • Passport details
  • Language results: Enter IELTS/CELPIP/TEF/TCF scores
  • Education: Enter education history + ECA reference number
  • Work experience: Enter each job with NOC, dates, country, hours
  • Personal history: Past addresses, travel, visa refusals (CRITICAL — declare all)
  • Family information: Parents, siblings — including those in Canada

Step 4: System calculates CRS

After completing all sections, IRCC system calculates your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Range: 0-1,200. Higher = better invitation chances.

Step 5: Submit profile

Review all entered information for accuracy. Submit. Profile becomes active in the Express Entry pool.

Phase 4: Pool waiting

After submission, you wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA):

  • Draws typically occur every 2 weeks
  • General draws + category-based draws (French, healthcare, STEM, trades)
  • If your CRS meets the cutoff for any relevant draw, you receive ITA
  • If not invited within 12 months, profile expires (you can resubmit)

Phase 5: After ITA — PR application

After receiving ITA, you have 60 days (or 90 days for some applicants) to submit complete PR application with all supporting documents + fees. This is the actual PR application — different from the free profile.

Common Express Entry profile mistakes

  • Wrong NOC code — see NOC TEER guide
  • Hiding visa refusals — misrepresentation = 5-year ban
  • Submitting before language scores meet minimum
  • Not declaring all family members (including non-accompanying)
  • Incorrect work hours (need 30+ hours/week minimum for full-time, or proportional part-time)
  • Not updating profile when scores or experience changes

FAQ

Is profile creation free?

Yes — creating an Express Entry profile is FREE. Fees apply only after Invitation to Apply (ITA) — at PR application submission (~CAD $1,525 federal + biometrics + provincial fees if PNP).

How long does profile creation take?

If you have all documents ready (IELTS scores, ECA, work experience documentation), profile creation can be done in 30-60 minutes online. If you need to gather documents first (IELTS, ECA), preparation takes 2-6 months typically.

Profile validity?

Express Entry profiles are valid for 12 months from creation. If not invited within 12 months, you can resubmit (essentially re-create with current information). Profiles must be kept up-to-date if circumstances change.

Can I improve my CRS after profile creation?

Yes — you can update language scores (retake IELTS), report new work experience, update spouse information, etc. Higher CRS increases ITA odds. Updates are reflected immediately in your pool position.

What if I don't get invited?

After 12 months, you can resubmit profile or improve CRS first. Common improvement strategies: retake IELTS for higher scores, gain more skilled work experience, pursue provincial nomination (600 points), pursue French language for category-based draws.
