Phase 3: Profile creation (30-60 minutes online)
Step 1: Create IRCC account
Visit canada.ca → IRCC online account. Create using GCKey or Sign-In Partner. Confirm email + set up account.
Step 2: Begin Express Entry profile
From IRCC account, click "Apply to come to Canada" → Express Entry. The system walks you through each section sequentially.
Step 3: Complete each section
- Personal information: Name, date of birth, nationality, marital status
- Spouse/CLP information (if applicable)
- Dependent children (if applicable)
- Contact information: Email, address
- Passport details
- Language results: Enter IELTS/CELPIP/TEF/TCF scores
- Education: Enter education history + ECA reference number
- Work experience: Enter each job with NOC, dates, country, hours
- Personal history: Past addresses, travel, visa refusals (CRITICAL — declare all)
- Family information: Parents, siblings — including those in Canada
Step 4: System calculates CRS
After completing all sections, IRCC system calculates your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. Range: 0-1,200. Higher = better invitation chances.
Step 5: Submit profile
Review all entered information for accuracy. Submit. Profile becomes active in the Express Entry pool.
Phase 4: Pool waiting
After submission, you wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA):
- Draws typically occur every 2 weeks
- General draws + category-based draws (French, healthcare, STEM, trades)
- If your CRS meets the cutoff for any relevant draw, you receive ITA
- If not invited within 12 months, profile expires (you can resubmit)
Phase 5: After ITA — PR application
After receiving ITA, you have 60 days (or 90 days for some applicants) to submit complete PR application with all supporting documents + fees. This is the actual PR application — different from the free profile.
Common Express Entry profile mistakes
- Wrong NOC code — see NOC TEER guide
- Hiding visa refusals — misrepresentation = 5-year ban
- Submitting before language scores meet minimum
- Not declaring all family members (including non-accompanying)
- Incorrect work hours (need 30+ hours/week minimum for full-time, or proportional part-time)
- Not updating profile when scores or experience changes
FAQ
Is profile creation free?
Yes — creating an Express Entry profile is FREE. Fees apply only after Invitation to Apply (ITA) — at PR application submission (~CAD $1,525 federal + biometrics + provincial fees if PNP).
How long does profile creation take?
If you have all documents ready (IELTS scores, ECA, work experience documentation), profile creation can be done in 30-60 minutes online. If you need to gather documents first (IELTS, ECA), preparation takes 2-6 months typically.
Profile validity?
Express Entry profiles are valid for 12 months from creation. If not invited within 12 months, you can resubmit (essentially re-create with current information). Profiles must be kept up-to-date if circumstances change.
Can I improve my CRS after profile creation?
Yes — you can update language scores (retake IELTS), report new work experience, update spouse information, etc. Higher CRS increases ITA odds. Updates are reflected immediately in your pool position.
What if I don't get invited?
After 12 months, you can resubmit profile or improve CRS first. Common improvement strategies: retake IELTS for higher scores, gain more skilled work experience, pursue provincial nomination (600 points), pursue French language for category-based draws.
