ECA Canada — Educational Credential Assessment Guide (2026)

An ECA (Educational Credential Assessment) confirms that your foreign degree is equivalent to a Canadian credential. It's required for Express Entry FSW and many PNPs. This page covers which provider to use, what documents you need, processing times, and how to avoid the most common ECA mistakes.

When you need an ECA

  • Express Entry FSW — REQUIRED. No FSW points for education without ECA.
  • Express Entry CEC — Not required, but ECA adds CRS points
  • Express Entry FSTC — Not required, but adds CRS points
  • PNP (most) — Required for most provincial nominations
  • AIP (Atlantic Immigration Program) — Required
  • Caregiver Pilots — Required (Canadian high school OR ECA-validated foreign equivalent)
  • RCIP/FCIP — Required
  • Study permits (for some institutions/programs) — Some Canadian colleges/universities may request ECA for admission (separate from IRCC requirement)

IRCC-approved ECA providers

IRCC accepts ECAs from the following:

  1. World Education Services (WES) — most popular, online, fast
  2. International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS) — Canadian-based, alternative to WES
  3. International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) — Alberta-based, often used for Alberta PNP
  4. International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) — BC-based, often used for BC PNP
  5. Comparative Education Service (CES) — University of Toronto-based
  6. Medical Council of Canada (MCC) — specifically for medical doctors (MD ECA)
  7. Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) — for pharmacists

Comparing the main providers

ProviderCost (2026, CAD)Processing TimePremium OptionBest for
WES$230-$310 + courier~20 business days+$220 = 7 business daysMost applicants (default)
ICAS$230-$300~6-8 weeksNoAlternative if WES delayed
IQAS~$200~12-20 weeksNoAlberta PNP applicants
ICES~$200~6-12 weeksNoBC PNP applicants
CES (UofT)~$210~10-16 weeksNoOntario university-affiliated applicants

How the ECA process works

  1. Register online with chosen provider — create account, pay fee
  2. Submit documents:
    • Photocopy of degree certificate
    • Photocopy of academic transcripts
    • Identification (passport)
    • Authorization for verification
  3. Provider contacts your university — for direct transcript verification. Universities in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, etc. can take 4-12 weeks to respond. This is often the longest delay.
  4. Provider evaluates — compares your credential to Canadian equivalents using their database
  5. ECA report issued — digital report + you can request physical copy. Includes Canadian-equivalent credential (e.g., "Bachelor's degree" or "Master's degree")
  6. Report sent to IRCC reference number — needed when you create EE profile

Documents required

  • Degree certificate(s) — official copies; if multiple degrees, get ECA for each
  • Academic transcripts — must be official, sealed envelope from university (some providers accept electronic submission directly from university)
  • Passport or government ID
  • Translations — if documents are not in English/French, certified translations required
  • Marriage certificate — if name on degree differs from current name

Pro tips for faster ECA

  • Start ECA process EARLY — 4-6 months before planned EE profile creation
  • Pay WES Premium if you're in a rush (~CAD $220 extra = 7 business days vs 20)
  • Ensure transcripts are sent directly by university (not by you)
  • Follow up with university registrar's office weekly — they're often the bottleneck
  • For multiple degrees, submit them simultaneously to the same provider (saves time vs sequential)

Common ECA mistakes

  • Starting ECA too late — university transcript delays can push timeline 6+ months
  • Using non-IRCC-approved provider — wasted fee + time
  • Sending photocopies instead of official sealed transcripts
  • Not declaring all credentials — should get ECA for all degrees, not just highest
  • Using expired ECA (issued more than 5 years before EE profile creation) without refresh
  • Missing certified translations for non-English documents

FAQ

Do I need an ECA for Express Entry?

Yes if you have foreign education and want CRS points for it. FSW REQUIRES an ECA (no points without it). CEC doesn't require ECA (but ECA can add CRS points). FSTC doesn't require ECA (but adds CRS points). PNPs vary — most require ECA.

Which ECA provider should I use?

WES is most popular (fastest, online, well-known). ICAS, IQAS, ICES, ECE Aviator are alternatives — sometimes faster or cheaper for specific countries. Comparative Education Service is for specific regulated professions (pharmacy, etc.). For most general applications, WES is the default.

How long does an ECA take?

WES standard processing: 20 business days after they receive all documents. Add 4-12 weeks for institution to send transcripts (especially from India, Pakistan, Nigeria — universities can be slow). Total: 6-16 weeks typically. WES Premium service ~CAD $200 extra reduces to ~7 business days.

Is ECA valid forever?

Yes — once issued, ECAs are valid permanently for Express Entry (no expiry). However, IRCC requires ECA to be issued WITHIN 5 YEARS of your Express Entry profile creation. If older than 5 years at profile creation, request a refresh from the ECA provider.

What if I have multiple degrees?

Get an ECA for each. List all degrees + diplomas + post-secondary credentials. IRCC awards CRS points for the highest qualifying credential. Multiple degrees can add to combined education points.
