How to Track IRCC Application Status 2026 — Complete Guide

Waiting for an immigration decision is stressful. IRCC provides multiple ways to track your application + interpret status updates. This page covers all tracking methods, what status codes mean, when to be concerned, and how to escalate.

Three main tracking methods

1. IRCC Online Account (most detailed)

If you submitted application online via IRCC portal:

  • Sign in to your account at canada.ca → IRCC Online Account
  • Click your application
  • View status, messages, document requests, payment info, biometric instructions

Most comprehensive tool. Updates in real-time as IRCC officer makes notes.

2. Application Status Tracker

For some paper-submitted applications + some sponsorship cases:

  • Visit canada.ca/check-status
  • Enter application reference number + personal details
  • View basic status updates

3. Email notifications

IRCC sends email notifications when:

  • AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt) issued
  • BIL (Biometric Instruction Letter) issued
  • Medical request issued
  • Background check status changes
  • Decision made (approval or refusal)

Common IRCC status codes + what they mean

AOR (Acknowledgement of Receipt)

Application + fees received. Processing has begun. Doesn't mean approval. Typically issued 1-30 days after submission.

Biometrics Received

Your biometric data has been received by IRCC + linked to your file. Necessary before processing can continue.

Medical: Passed / Passed (Excessive Demand) / Failed

Passed = medical exam clear. Passed (Excessive Demand) = potential issue, may trigger PFL. Failed = medical inadmissibility (rare, usually accompanied by PFL).

Background Verification: In Progress

RCMP + CSIS conducting security checks. Can take months for some applicants (high-risk countries, military backgrounds, sensitive professions). Out of IRCC's hands.

Decision Made

Application has been decided. Check your portal/email for outcome. Approval: next steps for landing/permit. Refusal: refusal letter + reasons.

Application Approved + COPR Issued

For PR applications — you're approved. Confirmation of Permanent Residence document being prepared/issued. Next: receive COPR + travel to Canada.

Permanent Residence Confirmed

For PR applications — you've been confirmed as a PR (landed in Canada).

When to worry about delays

Within standard processing time = normal

Check current processing times at canada.ca/processing-times. If your wait is within published times, it's normal. Don't worry yet.

Past standard processing time

If you're past published times, contact IRCC via web form requesting status. Response 30-60 days.

3+ months past standard with no movement

Consider:

  • Order GCMS notes via ATIP — see what's happening internally
  • Submit IRCC web form requesting update
  • Contact your Member of Parliament (MP) — MP staff can inquire on your behalf, sometimes accelerates
  • If counsel involved, RCIC/lawyer can also submit case inquiries

Contacting IRCC

IRCC Client Support Centre

1-888-242-2100. Generic responses; doesn't share specific file details due to privacy. Best for procedural questions, not case status.

Web form inquiry

canada.ca → Contact IRCC → Web form. Submit specific case inquiry. IRCC responds 30-60+ days. Better than phone for case-specific questions.

MP help

Your Member of Parliament (find via ourcommons.ca) can submit case inquiry on your behalf. MP staff often have better access to IRCC officers. Effective for: significantly delayed applications, urgent humanitarian cases, complex situations.

GCMS notes via ATIP

For maximum insight: order GCMS notes to see what officer notes say internally. 30-90+ days to receive. See GCMS Notes via ATIP.

Common status tracking mistakes

  • Checking too obsessively (status doesn't update minute-by-minute)
  • Panicking before standard processing time has elapsed
  • Not understanding background checks are out of IRCC control
  • Multiple parallel inquiries (sometimes confuses IRCC)
  • Not contacting MP for genuinely delayed cases

FAQ

Where do I check my IRCC application status?

Two main places: (1) IRCC Online Account (canada.ca → sign in) — for applications submitted online; (2) Application Status Tracker (canada.ca/check-status) — for some application types. Both show similar info; online account is more detailed for portal applications.

What does 'AOR' mean?

Acknowledgement of Receipt — IRCC has received your complete application + fees. AOR confirms application is in queue for processing. Doesn't mean approval — just that application is being processed. AOR usually issued within 1-30 days of submission.

What does 'BIL' mean?

Biometric Instruction Letter — IRCC has determined your application requires biometrics. You have 30 days to give biometrics at approved location. Without biometrics, application may stall.

What if my status hasn't changed in months?

Common scenario. Possible reasons: (1) Application in queue for officer review; (2) Background checks (RCMP, CSIS) processing — can take months; (3) Medical exam under review; (4) Officer requested additional documents internally. If 3+ months no movement, consider GCMS notes via ATIP to see what's happening.

Can I contact IRCC for status?

Limited options. IRCC Client Support Centre (1-888-242-2100) gives generic responses; doesn't share specific file details. Web form via canada.ca can submit status inquiries — IRCC responds in 30-60+ days. For urgent matters, MP help can sometimes accelerate.
