Visa-Required Country — Who Needs a Canadian Visa

A country whose passport holders require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada — regardless of purpose (tourism, business, study, work, transit). The default status for most non-Western countries. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Philippines, China, Iran, Egypt, Nigeria, and most African / Middle Eastern / Asian countries are visa-required.

What is a visa-required country?

A visa-required country is one whose passport holders need a full Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) to enter Canada — for any purpose, by any mode (air, land, sea). This is distinct from eTA-required countries (visa-exempt with eTA) and visa-exempt countries (US citizens, etc.).

Most Halani client nationalities are visa-required

For Halani's primary client base:

  • Pakistan: TRV-required
  • India: TRV-required
  • Bangladesh: TRV-required
  • Philippines: TRV-required
  • China (mainland): TRV-required
  • Iran: TRV-required
  • Egypt: TRV-required
  • Nigeria: TRV-required
  • Sri Lanka: TRV-required
  • Nepal: TRV-required
  • Vietnam: TRV-required

Visa-exempt countries (require only eTA for air travel)

These countries' passport holders need only an eTA (not a TRV) to fly to Canada:

  • UK and most EU countries
  • Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong-SAR, Taiwan, Brunei
  • Most Gulf states (UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia were added/removed over the years — check current status)
  • Israel
  • Mexico (status has shifted; check current rules)

For visa-exempt nationals traveling by land or sea (not by air), generally no advance authorization is needed — just a passport. eTA applies to air entry only.

Visa-exempt with full exemption (no eTA, no TRV)

  • US citizens — passport only required for air entry, passport or US-issued enhanced license for land entry
  • Canadian citizens — must carry Canadian passport for air entry to Canada (since November 2016)

Why this matters

For visa-required nationals planning any visit to Canada:

  • Apply for the appropriate TRV (visitor / study / work / Super Visa) from outside Canada before travel
  • Allow sufficient processing time at the relevant IRCC visa office
  • Submit biometrics at a Canada VAC in your country

Visa-required nationals cannot use an eTA — they need the full TRV regardless of trip duration.

Halani's note

Most Halani clients (Pakistani, Indian, Filipino, Chinese, MENA, African) are visa-required. We coordinate the TRV process — visitor, study, work, Super Visa — from the country of nationality through the relevant IRCC visa office.
