Renunciation of Canadian Citizenship
The formal process by which a Canadian citizen voluntarily gives up Canadian citizenship. Distinct from automatic loss. Typically pursued for legal reasons in another country (taxation, citizenship-restricted nations, or military service obligations).
What is renunciation of citizenship?
Renunciation of Canadian citizenship is the formal voluntary process by which a Canadian citizen gives up Canadian status. The renunciation must be approved by IRCC — it's not automatic just because you swear an oath in another country.
When renunciation is pursued
- Another country requires it — some countries (e.g. Japan, Austria, India fully, etc.) require renouncing one citizenship as a condition of acquiring or retaining theirs
- Tax / financial reasons — particularly for US-tax-related renunciation patterns (though US has separate renunciation)
- Military service — some countries require single citizenship for military commissions
- Personal preference — rarer, but some long-term expatriates choose to renounce
Requirements
To be eligible to renounce:
- Be a Canadian citizen (you can't renounce what you don't have)
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have or will be issued another citizenship (Canada won't make you stateless)
- Be mentally capable of making the decision
- Not reside in Canada at the time of renunciation (typically)
- No security reasons for retaining Canadian citizenship (IRCC has discretion to refuse if your renunciation would be contrary to public order)
Process
- Submit a renunciation application to IRCC with supporting evidence (proof of other citizenship, current passport, etc.)
- Pay the renunciation fee (currently CAD 100)
- IRCC reviews the application
- If approved, you receive a certificate of renunciation
- Canadian citizenship ceases on the date specified in the certificate
Resumption — getting it back
Resumption of citizenship may be possible later if circumstances change. The process is its own application with its own fee + criteria. Not automatic.
Halani's note
Renunciation is rare for our client base. Most Halani clients are pursuing Canadian citizenship as a permanent goal — not contemplating giving it up. We refer the rare renunciation case to specialized counsel.
