What is "physical presence"?

Physical presence refers to the actual days an applicant has spent in Canada — not just being a Canadian PR. Time outside Canada (vacations, work travel, family visits abroad) does not count toward physical presence, even if you were a PR throughout.

The 1,095-day requirement

Adult citizenship applicants (18+) must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the 5 years immediately preceding the citizenship application date.

The 5-year window is calculated backward from the date IRCC receives the application.

Pre-PR time — half-day credit

Time spent in Canada before becoming a PR (as a foreign worker, student, or visitor) counts toward physical presence at a half-day rate, up to a maximum of 365 days credit total. This recognizes long-standing residence in Canada before PR.

How to calculate physical presence

Tools available:

  • IRCC's Physical Presence Calculator on canada.ca — free, official, tracks days you were inside / outside Canada
  • Manual calculation using your passport stamps + travel records

Maintain accurate records:

  • Passport entry/exit stamps
  • CBSA travel history (free, available via ATIP)
  • Airline tickets, boarding passes
  • Hotel / hosting records from countries visited

What if I'm short on physical presence?

You can simply wait until you accumulate enough days. The physical-presence requirement doesn't expire — once you reach 1,095 days within a 5-year window, you can apply.

Special situations:

  • Crown servants abroad on official duty may count overseas days as physical presence
  • Accompanying spouses of Crown servants abroad may similarly qualify
  • Brief temporary absences (vacations, work trips) reduce your physical-presence count

Income tax filing requirement

Applicants must have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 of the 5 years in the qualifying period if required to file under the Income Tax Act.

Halani's note

Many citizenship refusals happen because the applicant miscounts physical presence. Use the official calculator + your CBSA travel history (free via ATIP). If you're close to the 1,095-day threshold, wait an extra few months for buffer rather than applying borderline.
