Dual Citizenship Canada 2026 — Country Rules + Practical Issues

Canada permits dual citizenship without restriction — but your country of origin's rules matter. This page covers which countries allow dual with Canada, OCI for Indians, tax implications, and practical issues for dual citizens.

Canada's position: dual citizenship OK

Canadian law permits dual (or multiple) citizenship. You can become a Canadian citizen + retain your original citizenship if your country of origin permits. Canada doesn't ask you to renounce other citizenships upon naturalization. Children of Canadian citizens born abroad may acquire dual citizenship by birth (with limitations under first-generation rule).

Countries that allow dual citizenship with Canada

  • UK — full dual allowed
  • USA — full dual allowed (with US tax obligations on worldwide income)
  • Most EU countries — full dual allowed (Germany changed rules in 2024 to allow dual)
  • Australia, New Zealand — full dual allowed
  • Philippines — dual allowed (since 2003)
  • Bangladesh — dual allowed (with restrictions on certain political activities)
  • Sri Lanka — dual allowed
  • Iran — dual allowed (with significant Iranian government scrutiny + risks)
  • Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan — dual allowed (with conditions)
  • Mexico — dual allowed
  • Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile — dual allowed
  • South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria — dual allowed (Nigeria + South Africa with conditions)
  • Russia — dual allowed (with declaration requirement)
  • Turkey, Israel — dual allowed

Countries that DON'T allow full dual with Canada

India (OCI instead)

India does NOT allow full dual citizenship. Upon naturalization in Canada, you must renounce Indian citizenship. India offers Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) — a lifelong visa giving:

  • Lifetime visa-free entry to India
  • Work + study rights in India
  • Property purchase (with restrictions — no agricultural land)
  • NOT: voting rights, public office, certain professional restrictions

Apply for OCI after acquiring Canadian citizenship. Online application; ~3-6 months processing.

China

China doesn't permit dual citizenship. Upon Canadian naturalization, Chinese citizens are considered to have automatically lost Chinese citizenship (in theory; in practice, more complex). No equivalent of OCI for China.

Pakistan

Pakistan permits dual citizenship with about 19 countries (including Canada) — Pakistani-Canadians can retain both citizenships. Apply for Pakistan Origin Card (POC) or NICOP (National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis) for travel + identity purposes.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar

GCC countries generally don't permit dual citizenship for their nationals. Upon Canadian naturalization, GCC nationality may be revoked. Significant consideration for GCC nationals considering Canadian PR + eventual citizenship.

Japan

Japan doesn't permit dual citizenship. Japanese nationals naturalizing in Canada must renounce Japanese citizenship within 2 years of acquiring foreign citizenship. Enforcement varies; some Japanese-Canadians retain Japanese passports unofficially.

South Korea

Limited — Korea permits dual citizenship in narrow cases (high-level scientists, athletes, women acquiring foreign citizenship through marriage, others). Most Korean-Canadians need to renounce Korean citizenship upon naturalization.

Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia

None permit dual citizenship. Naturalization in Canada means loss of original citizenship for these nationals.

Tax implications

Canadian tax law focuses on RESIDENCE, not citizenship. Key points:

  • Living in Canada: Pay Canadian tax on worldwide income
  • Living abroad: Generally don't pay Canadian tax (with exceptions for certain employment, severance, etc.)
  • US dual citizens: USA taxes citizens worldwide regardless of residence — file US taxes annually even while in Canada
  • Treaty considerations: Canada has tax treaties with most countries reducing double taxation
  • FBAR + FATCA: US dual citizens must report foreign accounts to US (Form FBAR if balance exceeds USD $10K)

Consult tax professional for cross-border situations.

Practical issues for dual citizens

  • Travel: Use Canadian passport when entering Canada; use other passport when entering your other country of citizenship (often required by that country)
  • Military service: Some countries require military service of citizens regardless of residence (Korea, Israel, others) — dual citizens may be subject
  • Conscription risks: Don't travel to countries that may conscript you
  • Property + inheritance: Dual citizenship can affect inheritance + property rights in both countries
  • Voting: Eligible to vote in both countries (some countries restrict overseas voting)
  • Consular protection: Canada generally cannot provide consular protection to Canadian citizens within their other country of citizenship (e.g., Canadian-Iranian visiting Iran cannot get Canadian consular help if arrested)

Common dual citizenship mistakes

  • Not checking your country's dual citizenship rules before naturalizing in Canada
  • Not applying for OCI (Indians) post-Canadian naturalization → losing automatic India access
  • Underestimating US worldwide tax obligations
  • Traveling to country of origin without knowing your dual status risks
  • Not declaring all citizenships on relevant applications

FAQ

Does Canada allow dual citizenship?

Yes — Canada permits dual citizenship without restriction. You can become a Canadian citizen while keeping your original citizenship (if your country of origin permits).

Which countries don't allow dual citizenship with Canada?

Countries that don't permit dual citizenship include: China, India (limited — only OCI status, not full dual), Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait (limited), Pakistan (limited — case-by-case), Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, others. Many require renunciation of original citizenship upon naturalization elsewhere.

What's OCI for Indians?

Overseas Citizen of India — NOT full dual citizenship. India doesn't permit full dual citizenship. OCI is a permanent lifelong visa for persons of Indian origin who have foreign citizenship, allowing: lifetime visa-free entry to India, work + study in India, property purchase (with some restrictions). OCI is NOT Indian citizenship — no vote, no public office, no agricultural land purchase.

What are Canadian dual citizens' tax obligations?

Canada taxes residents on worldwide income (citizenship doesn't matter for tax — residence does). If you live in Canada, you pay Canadian tax on worldwide income. If you live abroad, you generally don't owe Canadian tax (with exceptions for certain employment). Your other country's tax laws may differ — USA notably taxes citizens worldwide regardless of residence.

Can my Canadian citizenship be revoked?

Generally no — Canadian citizenship is robust + revocation is very rare. Limited revocation grounds: fraud/misrepresentation in citizenship application, treason-level crimes (extremely rare, requires specific legal process). Standard Canadians don't risk citizenship revocation.
