Canada Asylum Claims — Inland Refugee Claimants
How many people have filed an inland asylum claim in Canada — by year, source country, and where the claim was filed (airport, land border, inland office). These are claims referred to the IRB / Refugee Protection Division for hearing.
Inland asylum claims, year by year
Annual count of asylum claims filed inside Canada. Note the sharp 2022-2024 surge: post-pandemic border reopenings combined with the March 2023 closure of Roxham Road as an irregular crossing pushed claim volume to historic highs. 2026 is partial.
Where claims are filed (entry point)
Stacked yearly breakdown by where the claim was initiated. Inland claims (filed after entry) dominate consistently, but border crossings (CBSA land port) spike in years of heavy irregular migration.
Top source countries (top-25 monthly)
Cumulative top-25-per-month countries. The full distribution is more spread out — many smaller-volume nationalities are not in any monthly top-25 and so sit in 'Other'.
Claims filed by province
Province where the claim was initiated (not destination after).

About this data
Counts inland asylum claims — people who filed a refugee claim from inside Canada at a CBSA port of entry (airport, land border), inland CBSA office, or IRCC inland office. Distinct from "resettled refugees" (Government-Assisted or Privately Sponsored Refugees abroad). Claims here are referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB / RPD) for hearing. IRCC suppresses cells with counts 0-5.
Counts every inland claim filed in the calendar month. A single claimant may have a follow-on referral or be associated with family-member claims — both are counted.
